Superscripted Tamil

Tamil has a deficient script compared to other Indic scripts. The Tamil Script lacks distinct characters for voiced and aspirated consonants. Superscipted Tamil is one of the popular methods to express those pan-Indic-Consonants which are absent in the Tamil Script. Publishers had resorted to the use of Superscript (and also subscript) numerals to represent these letters in Tamil. See the Character Matix to view the complete system. 

Nativization Conventions

The following Nativization conventions are automatically applied when Tamil is the Target Script.  

• The Anusvara/Chandrabindu is replaced by the corresponding Nasal Sound  (e.g) पंकजम् : பங்கஜம் , पँच - பஞ்ச
• Intervocalic 'na' is replaced by Tamil NNNA ன (e.g) दनम् : த³னம், भगवन् : ப⁴க³வன்

Conversion Options

Use ஶ SHA

ஶ is an archaic Tamil letter, equivalent of the pan-Indic letter श śa. This letter is presently used only in very limited religious works. Select this option to enable this letter instead of ஸ². This letter is supported natively in Windows only in Visata/7. Others may need a suitable font which supports this character

Mark First Varga Letters

Usually, the firt letter of the Varga is not marked by any numeral. This option enables the marking of the first varga letter.

Use Subscript Numerals

Instead of superscript numerals subscript numerals are used.

Tamil OM

Tamil Script has a unique OM character which is a conjunct of Tamil Letter OO and Tamil pure consonant M. The Tamil Letter OM was added very later to the Tamil Unicode Codepoints. All occurrences of the OM will be replaced by the Atomic Tamil Codepoint OM. As with SHA it need a supported font (Latha in Window 7 supports Tamil OM)

Tamil Transcription

Tamil Script has a unique system of pronunciation. A single grapheme stands for one or more phones based on its position. /ச/ may stand from /c/, /s/ or even /j/ by virtue of its position in the word.  Hence, in a simple transliteration is not helpful in reading a native Tamil Text. A minimal knowledge about Tamil Phonetic Conventions is necessary to correctly read out the transliterated text. 

Check out this option, to transcribe the text to the Target Script based on the phonetic conventions of the Tamil Script. 

The following Conventions are applied:

1. Intervocalic unvoiced consonants /k/, /t/, /ṭ/ become voiced /g/,/d/,/ḍ/ (e.g)அகம் akam - agam, வாது vātu - vādu, நடை naṭai - naḍai

2. Intervocalic /c/ becomes /s/ (e.g) விசை vicai - visai

3. Nasalized unvoiced consonants /k/, /c/, /ṭ/, /t/, /p/ become voiced /g/, /j/ ,/ḍ/, /d/, /b/ (e.g) இங்கு iṅku - iṅgu, தஞ்சை tañcai - tañjai, அன்பு aṉpu - aṉbu

4. Unvoiced Consonants appearing after pure consonant /y/, /r/, /l/, /ḻ/ become voiced (e.g) வெல்க velka - velga, வளர்க vaḷarka - vaḷarga வாழ்தல் vāḻtal - vāḻdal

5. /s/ when /c/ is word-initial (e.g) சாயம் cāyam - sāyam

6. /c/ is retained as word initial, when the previous word-final is /c/ - வரச் சொன்னான் varac coṉṉāṉ

Exceptions

Expectedly, many of these conventions are not followed in pronouncing loan words. Even in some native Tamil words these conventions are not followed. 

பல்லி /palli/ - The word-initial /p/ is realized as voiced /b/. Hence pronounced /balli/

குதி /kuti/ - The word-initial /k/ is realized as voiced /g/. Pronounced as /gudi/

Usually, Word Initial consonants are not voiced, they are voiced only in Inter-vocalic positions. But the above two native words violate these conventions.

As of now, The Transcription doesn't take into consideration the loan words, and other native words which deviate from the conventional pronunciation. However, the Transcribed text is fairly accurate in its pronunciation.
